 We invite all Intermediate parents to an Information Session on Cannabis at Birchwood School TONIGHT at 6:30. We welcome our guest speakers, Tim Keizer, Police Liaison at Colonel Gray,Maliqi Fatdarth, Drug Recognition Expert, and Carmina Gaite, coordinator for mental health and addictions speaking about mental health implications.  

 BAND STUDENTS: 

 Congratulations on a great first day of the magazine campaign.  You sold a little over $10,000 worth of magazines which gets us a little over $3000 in profits.  You have ONE WEEK to sell as many as you can.  Our last collection day is NEXT Tuesday, October 2. If you need extra forms or catalogues, please see Mr. Nabuurs.

 Jazz Band will rehearse on THURSDAY at lunch time for this week only. Please sign up on the sheet in the outer band room before the end of the day today.

 September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, an opportunity for us all to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for future generations. It is a day that raises awareness of the history of residential schools for Indigenous peoples and that honours the thousands of survivors of residential schools. The Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat encourages all PSB students and staff to take part in and wear an orange shirt on September 28.  EAST WILTSHIRE IS CELEBRATING ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th WEAR ORANGE!!!

 FOOD DRIVE CHALLENGE TO HELP OTHERS:

Ms. Mackinley Curran’s class is once again organizing a school wide food drive in support of Farm Credit Canada’s, “Drive Away Hunger”. Last year our school collected 980 lbs of food to donate to local food banks!!!! If possible, students are asked to bring in 1 non-perishable food item to donate. Students from my homeroom will collect donated food twice per week from classrooms and record the number of items each homeroom brings in. The class in each grade that collects the most food during the week long collection will win a class ice cream prize. GET COLLECTING! 

Canadian Parents for French – will be giving a presentation on “Late French Immersion and Homework.”

 EWS GOLF TEAM – The Intermediate Zone Golf Championship is CANCELLED FOR TODAY DUE TO WEATHER CONDITONS.

WRESTLING/BOXING CLUB – East Wiltshire Wrestling/Boxing Club will be starting next week. Come out and be part of this Award winning club!  The wrestling/boxing club is a wonderful cross training ground for any sport and there is a possibility of competing at Canada Games.  Please see Mr. Galaise for a permission slip.

 TERRY FOX FACTS: During his Marathon of Hope, Terry said, “I could not leave [the cancer ward] knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even though I would be set free from mine. I was determined to take myself to the limit for this cause. I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.”

 EWS TERRY FOX RUN/WALK: Scheduled for this Friday, September 28th during last period. We encourage all students and staff to donate “Toonies for Terry” or make any donation as part our school’s contribution to the Terry Fox Foundation. Homeroom teachers will be collecting donations.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING Practice tomorrow. Reminder of the Unit meet next Tuesday, October 2nd.  Members of fall sport team who would like to participate in the unit meet please see Mrs. Doyle Hogan or Mr. Rogerson.

 Anyone wishing to participate in a 8 week support group for children of separated/divorced parents or guardians please see Mrs. Doyle-Hogan or Mr. Mitchell, school counsellors. It will take place on Wednesdays during 7th period, beginning today.

The KZ Skating School will be offering a CanSkate and CanPower program at the APM Centre

in Cornwall, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. CanSkate is a learn to skate program for participants

to learn the basic skating skills or improve their skills in a fun, exciting format. CanPower is for

skaters who are experienced Hockey or Ringette skaters. Professional coaches lead the

sessions and incorporate fitness, skill development and a variety of special days throughout the

season.Part time (21 sessions) or full time (41 sessions) registrations will be accepted at the arena on

The Canadian Ski Patrol (CSP) in Prince Edward Island is interested in recruiting new members to join its efforts to promote safety and injury prevention while providing the highest possible standards of education, certification and delivery in first aid and rescue services to the snow industry.  Training for the upcoming ski season begins this fall with an  information session taking place on Wednesday, October 3 at 7pm at both Queen Charlotte Intermediate School in Charlottetown, and Credit Union Place in Summerside.  EWS GOLF TEAM – The EWS Golf Team has been selected and will be playing in the Intermediate Zone Golf Championships this Wednesday (Sept. 26th) at Country View Golf Course. Students should be dismissed at 11:35am. The cost of the round will be $15 for the girls (9 holes) and $25 for the boys (18 holes). If there are any questions or concerns you can ask Mr. Currie or Mrs Campbell.

 TERRY FOX FACTS: On April 12, 1980, Terry dips his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Nfld to begin his odyssey. He filled a jug with water from the Atlantic Ocean with the intention of pouring it into the Pacific Ocean upon completing his journey. He runs an average of 42 kilometres a day (equivalent to a marathon a day) through six provinces.

After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres Terry stopped running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario; his primary cancer had spread to his lungs. Before returning to BC for treatment Terry said, “I’m gonna do my very best. I’ll fight. I promise I won’t give up.”

 TERRY FOX FACTS: When Terry was 19 years old, he discovers he has a malignant tumour in his right leg; the leg is amputated six inches above the knee. The night before his amputation he reads about an amputee runner and dreams of running. A year later, he begins training for his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. Terry writes to the Canadian Cancer Society to support his run: “I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.”

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL – “There will be no volleyball practice today for the girls school volleyball team.  Practice tomorrow will be at 330.  This is for the school team ONLY, there is no change to the training team practice times”

 The EWS Warriors Volleyball team won the Bronze Medal over the weekend at the 42nd annual ME Callaghan Girls volleyball tournament. 10 teams from PEI and Nova Scotia participated. EWS finished with a 5-1 won-loss record, and Kezia Saunders was selected to the tournament All-Star team.

 The Girl’s soccer team started their season with a 0-0 tie against KISH.  All of the girls had a good showing and MacKenzie Ramsay had the shutout in net.

 FIELD HOCKEY: Congratulations to the girls for their third win of the season, a 5-0 victory over Summerside. Goal scorers were Keera Vos (2), Payton Kelly (2) and Sarah MacEachern (1). Georgia Mallett recorded the shut out. Next practice is Monday, 3:30-5:00 pm at EWS.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING – Will be out of school next Wednesday, September 26th in the afternoon to run Brackley trail.  Please see Mrs. Doyle-Hogan or Mr. Rogerson if you are on a team sport and would like to run with us and compete in the unit meet on Tuesday, October 2nd.

 BASKETBALL – There will be basketball for any girls who would like to play on Saturday from 9:30-11:00am in the school gym. This is not the school team.

 Reminder Meet the Staff Night will be held tonight Thursday, September 20th @ 7:00pm. This is just an informal overview of your child’s class. Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held in October. There will be two sessions the first starting at 7:00pm and the second at 7:20pm.

 Students – Reminder to please have your student fees and student information forms into your homeroom teacher as soon as possible. 

 BAND

Any students in grade 8 or 9 band who would like to be in the jazz band this year are asked to sign up on the sheet in the outer band room by Friday of this week please.  First rehearsal will be next week.

 Wrestling/Boxing Club – The club will start next week – check the announcements.

 ATHLETICS

 ** Students planning to try out for teams are reminded to have forms filled out and pass them in to coaches at the first practice.

 INTRAMURALS: Free-play badminton. You must be changed to play.

 FIELD HOCKEY: Congratulations to the girls for their second win of the season, a 6-1 victory over Birchwood. Goal scorers were Keera Vos with 4 goals, Lexi Buote (1) and Rachel Richards (1). Sarah MacEachern was outstanding at the mid-field position and Georgia Mallett was the winning goaltender.  The girls cap off a very busy week with a game in Summerside today at 4:15 pm at the Credit Union Place turf field. Players, please dismiss at 2:40 to get prepared for drives. Good luck!

 EWS TERRY FOX RUN/WALK: Scheduled for Friday, September 28th during last period.  Any Grade 9 students interested in volunteering for this event, there will be a meeting tomorrow (Friday) during break in the gymnasium. Please see Ms.Sanderson if you have any questions.

  EWS Golf Club / Team – The EWS Golf Club will be playing a fun round of golf today 1pm at Glen Afton Golf Course. Students should be dismissed at 11:35am. All students are asked to have their forms signed and passed in to Mr. Currie (Rm. 708) ASAP. The cost of the round will be $15, it will be an additional $5 if you plan on renting clubs. This will also serve as a tryout for the EWS golf team.”

 INTRAMURALS: Today is free-play Badminton. Students who would like to take part must be changed into gym clothes and  be wearing indoor sneakers. Come at the beginning of your lunch to book a court and time.

 Duke of Edinburgh – Practice journey for the bike trip, will be held on Tonight @ 5:30pm – 7:00pm.  Meet in Milton at the bridge parking area with your bikes.  Students should see Mr. Galaise on Monday to sign up.  Teachers are welcome to attend, please let Mr. Galaise know if you plan to attend.
